Working Mum Q&A

So Hannah, when did you go back to work?
I went back self employed when my daughter was 2, and back full-time once they were both at school.

Why did you go back to work?
Financial need, personal need – time to start earning some proper money. As a single parent with no support it wasn’t feasible to work properly when they were smaller as the childcare was just crippling – it made no sense until they were both at school.

Do you use Childcare? If so, what do you use?
I now use a combination of breakfast club at school when required, holiday club, and babysitters. I don’t really have family around to help aside from my brothers.

Did you face any problems with returning to work?
Originally, when I just had my daughter, I was asked by an old boss to join her in helping a struggling newspaper generate more advertising sales (I’d previously worked for her magazine) – the hours meant the cost of childcare rendered me PAYING to be at work, I didn’t have the funds to be able to hold out long enough for my client base to grow and earn enough commission to stay.

How did you overcome these problems?
I had to leave.. and work on a plan B!

What is the best thing about returning to work?
Sense of purpose aside from being a caregiver, the social aspect, self development.

“Put reminders a week before, and then two days before anything super important in your mobile phone calendar – having more than one reminder ensures that mum-brain doesn’t get in the way!”

Hannah’s Favourite Mum Hack:

Get ORGANISED. Plan for everything. Make sandwiches that can be frozen – cheese, meats, and take them out at 8am to pop into a lunchbox – they’re ready to eat by lunchtime. You can bulk make them on a Sunday and fill a freezer drawer. Job done!
